Red solo cup Please share one cup of sugar to 4 cups of water was used for mixture in video. This video was made by me. I live in Mississippi. Yellow things in cup are flowers off of a feeder. Please keep your feeders clean and do not use red stuff they sell in stores for them. Please post where your from so I can track how far the video has gone . thanks. I just heard back from James Fisher with the Ornithology Research Department at White Memorial Foundation. There is NO Evidence that open topped feeders are dangerous to hummingbirds feeding from them and there is not much of a risk. Just like I considered, "splashback" can happen but since the hummingbird is diligent in preening and bathing there is no evidence that supports the statements made that it renders a hummingbird flightless if the sugar based nectar is used in the proper measures and the feeder is properly cleaned.. He also said the reason hummingbird feeders are covered and specifically designed for the most part is to keep wasps and hornets and other insects away from the nectar.
